Key Properties and Advantages

Exceptional Strength & Fracture Toughness: This is the standout feature of zirconia. Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia
Polycrystals (Y-TZP) undergo transformation toughening. When stress is applied, a microscopic phase change around a crack
tip creates compressive stresses that inhibit crack propagation. This gives zirconia rods remarkable resistance to chipping, breaking,
and impact, making them far less brittle than alumina ceramics. -
High Hardness and Wear Resistance: With a Vickers hardness of ~1200-1300 HV and a Mohs hardness of ~8.5, zirconia rods are
extremely resistant to abrasion, erosion, and mechanical wear. They maintain a smooth surface even under constant friction. -
Excellent Chemical Inertness & Corrosion Resistance: Zirconia is highly resistant to attack by most acids, alkalis, and solvents.
It does not rust or corrode, making it ideal for harsh chemical environments and medical applications. -
High Temperature Resistance: Zirconia has a very high melting point (~2,700°C / 4,890°F) and can operate effectively at elevated
temperatures while maintaining its mechanical properties. -
Low Thermal Conductivity: Zirconia is an excellent thermal insulator. This property is valuable in applications requiring thermal
barrier protection or where heat transfer is undesirable. -
Biocompatibility: Medical-grade yttria-stabilized zirconia is non-toxic, non-allergenic, and is approved for use in surgical implants
and dental devices due to its excellent biocompatibility. -
Electrical Insulation: Like most advanced ceramics, zirconia is an excellent electrical insulator.

Advantages and Limitations
Advantages:
Excellent overall mechanical properties (strength, toughness, and hardness).

Limitations:
Higher cost: Both the raw material and sintering process are more expensive than common ceramics like alumina.
Brittleness: Despite its high toughness among ceramics, it is still inherently brittle compared to metals and must be protected from severe impact and stress concentration.
Weight: High density (approximately 6 g/cm³), heavier than both alumina and silicon carbide.
