To use a cupel for gold melting, the gold is placed in the cupel along with a flux material, such as

lead oxide or borax. The cupel is then heated in a furnace to a high temperature, usually around

1,100 degrees Celsius. As the gold melts,the impurities are absorbed by the cupel, leaving behind

a button of pure gold at the bottom.
