The cupel is placed in a furnace along with the sample of ore. As the furnace heats up,

the precious metals in the sample melt and are absorbed by the porous cupel, leaving

behind any impurities or other elements. The cupel acts as a filter, absorbing the precious

metals while allowing other materials to be separated.
